As a field biologist, my work often brings me to places that cannot adequately be described in words.

Growing up along California's rugged coastline, it was little wonder I developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature.

On my way back N from a trip to LA I stopped at this spectacular NP. Formed by erupting volcanoes 23 MYA, the rugged spires (from which the park gets its name) are home to a number of endangered California Condors. On this particular day, as I approached the top of a ridge, I was greeted by 11 adults soaring into view at eye level. All 11 eventually landed on the exposed dome at middle right.

The fog lifts from the marsh at sunrise at the Palo Alto Baylands Park. I spent a large portion of my childhood waiting at the edge of this marsh during the winter flood tides that drive elusive black rails from their hiding places in the saltgrass.

The Mendenhall glacier is a 13.6 mile long glacier near Juneau, Alaska. The blue glacial ice carries fragments of an ancient forest from as long as 2,350 years ago. Global climate change has caused the glacier to recede 1.75 miles since 1929.
